Student Organization for Behavior Analysis

I was a SOBA member from 2018-2020, then an officer from 2020-2022, first as Student Event Coordinator, then as President. Both years I was an officer were fully online. Despite the difficult circumstances, our club persisted at a time when many student organizations went on hiatus or dissolved completely.

Our meeting schedule slowed, but never truly stopped. I also took this opportunity to do some much-needed housekeeping for the club, updating our constitution’s legal language, organizing the documentation on our OneDrive, and making a brand guideline to help our social media be more cohesive and eye-catching.

Science Day

CSU Stanislaus hosts an annual “Science Day” event, where local school districts bring kids to the university to learn about the different disciplines that are taught here. Student organizations have the opportunity to participate by hosting their own room full of learning activities for kids to participate in. I started helping to organize SOBA’s room in 2019, prior to becoming an officer. March of 2020 hosted the last in-person science day before our school closed for Covid.

Our activities included:

• Decorating your own bottle cap “Clicker” while a club member explains what a bridging stimulus is and how they’re used in behavior modification.

• “The Jumping Game” where kids hop on colored dots set to different schedules of reinforcement and try to guess how many jumps it takes to get a reward for each dot. This event resulted in a lot of collaboration between kids as they coached each other in choosing different approaches to try and find the answer collectively.

• A naming contest for one of our lab pigeons, who was present live at the event, underneath a video of what shaping a behavior for a pigeon looks like. Pigeon 56 acquired the name “Daisy” in 2020.
